That Christmas My Condo Flooded…

In what is just about the most 2020 way I could possibly end the year, I was flooded. On the Monday before Christmas it was really raining hard. I got a call from my neighbor Chelsea right about the time Don and I were going to hit record on a show.

“You might want to get over here, I think your place is flooding.”

I jumped in my truck and headed home – opened the front door and promptly stepped into a few inches of water in the kitchen.

I looked over at the kitchen sink and the dishwasher – the water wasn’t come from there. We have water alarms in our building, and it sounded like all hell was breaking loose.

I went to the main bathroom and could not believe what I saw.

The bathtub was filled to the brim with black water, and the toilet looked like a Geiser at Yellowstone. Grey water was just gushing out onto the floor and into the rest of the condo.

It continued like this for about 30-45 minutes. There was no way to turn the water off. I went over into the guest bathroom, and the same thing was happening. Out of the shower and out of the toilet came a river of black and grey water.

While I’m not that great at estimating water volumes in this situation, it had to be thousands upon thousands of gallons.

For whatever reason, when things like this happen, I become remarkably calm and just snap into action.

I stacked up as much furniture as I could out of the water, grabbed a push broom, and began to sweep out the water through my French doors.

After calling in some reinforcements to help out, I got on the phone with my insurance company and started to figure out what the next steps were going to be.

I won’t bore you with the long to-do list ahead, but I think it will be at least a few months before we can identify and repair the underlying issues and then replace all the damaged flooring and drywall.

I usually try to wrap up a post like this with some kind of silver lining, but on this one, the best I can do is what I said to Don and my friend Charles as they were helping me clean up that night: “This is going to be a great story someday.”
