In all my years of covering tragedy on the radio, there is one thing I know….
When Mr. Roger’s asked children to “ Look for the helpers, there are always helpers”, in times of immense pain and anguish…
He was right…
When fellow Americans are in peril…
The best that America has to offer, “ the helpers”, always show up.
In 2005, in the aftermath of Katrina, we saw firefighter’s from New York City on trucks they drove from New York State putting out fires side by side with the firefighters of New Orleans.
They drove 6 trucks down…
Their trucks would respond to calls in the City with fire fighters from both departments riding side by side on the tailboards.
A few jackets said NYFD on the back next to bunker jackets marked NOFD.
When I asked one firefighter from NYFD why they came…
He said” they came for us in the aftermath of 9-11.” We just came to return the favor.
Most of the trucks and firehouses in the City of NOLA had all been flooded out.
Their were local firefighters there, but their equipment was gone.
After weeks of help ,it was time for the NY firefighter’s to return to their firehouses in New York Ciry.
But some who rode down on their engine, had to fly home.
It’s because , before they headed North, they left one of their engines behind, to help the City recover.
It was was renamed “ The Spirit of New Orleans”.
I couldn’t be prouder of these boy’s from Kitsap pictured below.
In the words of Todd Beamer who helped take down flight 93 in that Pennsylvania field over two decades ago….
“ Let’s Roll! “ America!
“ Let’s Roll “ South Kitsap!”
One day I’m sure the men and women of the LAFD will be back to return the favor.
It’s what makes us the home of the free….because you all or so brave.
