For three weeks now, we’ve been on this journey together.
- Week One: Some of us had to detox and adjust to this new challenge.
- Week Two: We began noticing changes—to our skin, temperament, weight, energy, blood pressure, blood sugar, and even our wallets.
- Week Three: Questions started arising—could our lives be better without alcohol? Some of us noticed improvements in parenting, time management, stress levels, and overall health.
And now, here we are, heading into Week Four, with a big question on our minds:
Should I keep going?
Here are three inspiring people who decided to continue their journey beyond Dry January:
1. Lance Armstrong
The cyclist announced this week:
“A year ago today, I decided it was no longer the best for me and my family to continue drinking. That was then, this is now. There is no turning back.”
2. Tom Holland (Spiderman)
The actor shared:
“I stopped drinking alcohol in 2022 after struggling during Dry January. I realized I had a problem with drinking and decided to quit for good. My life has never been better.”
3. Bradley Cooper
Cooper quit drinking after realizing:
“I thought it would ruin my life.”
He credits a difficult conversation with Will Arnett in 2004, therapy, and becoming a father for helping him stay sober. He reflected:
“If I wouldn’t have stopped, I was going to lose everything.”
Reflecting on Your Journey
As we head into the final week of Dry January, I encourage you to do something challenging yet rewarding: gather evidence about your life without alcohol—without judgment.
When I struggled during Dry January seven years ago, my therapist, Dr. Wright, gave me simple but powerful advice:
- Journal extensively about your experiences.
- Engage in physical activities that bring you joy—running, biking, or even swinging a hammer, as I did while renovating homes with a dear friend.
After six months of not drinking, Dr. Wright asked me three crucial questions:
- Is your life better after six months?
- Is it the same after six months?
- Or is it no different?
For me, the evidence was clear, just as it was for Lance, Tom, and Bradley. But this isn’t about me.
This Is About You
What does your evidence tell you after three or four weeks?
- Is it telling you to keep going past January?
- Has this exercise taught you that you can moderate or go without alcohol whenever you choose?
Take the time this week to reflect and gather the evidence—without harsh judgments. Whatever your decision, it’s a step toward understanding yourself better.
I’ll check in one last time after Week Four is complete. Until then, congrats on all your hard work and determination!
Love and respect to all of you as you finish strong—let’s GO!
